Just off the dock there's evidence of the the old mining operation that happened here over 100 years ago. Its amazing whats been preserved especially under the water. This mining cart must have fallen off the original dock where they had carts taking ore down to the steam ships that would dock to take on gold and copper. Another interesting side story - The first National Geographic Exploration vessel stopped at where the lodge is now located to take on supplies in 1910. The old dock is now gone but you can still find pier pillings underwater where the original structure was. There's even been interesting dinner wear found in sediment in the area. I think more would have survived but the massive 1964 earthquake that hit Alaska changed the landscape in Prince William Sound dramatically both above and under the water. Most likely collapsing old brittle wood into pieces and burying relics.
