Whales are common in Alaska in the summer and we often see them on our trips out and about on the ocean. Sometimes we see them cruising the coastline looking for an easy meal to swallow and then sit back and float around. This day we had one cruise by the lodge beach and start bubble netting his prey to shallow water. He'd coral small herring into a cove and then race in to gabble them up. As you see in the image, he has to turn his head sideways to lunge at the school of fish. Its amazing how they can go into very shallow water and I often worry that they'll get stranded. Although it does happen in Alaska every once in awhile, thankfully none have that visit the area where the lodge is at.
